Cornhole, like any other sport, has a it's own lingo and collection of unique terms tat you will hear when tossing bags either at tournament or even a backyard bbq!  Here is a collection of terms frequently used during cornhole matches. If you have any to add, please comment or drop us a line and we'll post it up on the page!

  • Ace – a bag that lands directly on the surface of the board, scoring 1 point.
  • Back door – a cornhole/airmail that scores over the top of a blocker.
  • Backstop - A bag that lands past the cornhole but remains on the board creating a backboard for a slider to knock into without going off the board.
  • Blocker – a bag sitting in front of the hole, blocking sliders
  • Cornfusion - When players or teams cannot agree on the scoring of a given inning.
  • Cornhole – a bag that lands right in the hole, scoring 3 points
  • Cowpie – same thing as an ace.
  • Dirty Bag - A bag that is on the ground or is hanging off the board touching the ground.
  • Fill – the materials inside the bag, usually corn or resin.
  • Gusher / Jumanji / Double Deuce / Catorce - Four bags throw into the hole by a single player in a single round!
  • Hammer - The last bag tossed each round....  "drop the hammer!!!!"
  • Hanger – when a bag lands on the rim of the hole, but doesn’t fall in.
  • Honors – the team that gets to throw first, because they scored last the previous round.
  • Hooker - A cornhole bag hitting the board and hooking or curving around a blocker and going in the hole.
  • Jumper - A bag that strikes another bag on the board causing it to jump up into the cornhole.  This is a highly skilled cornhole shot....however sometimes it is made just by being lucky!

  • Sally, Mary, Alice – terms that denote a bag that hits the ground before reaching the board...otherwise known as a Nancy
  • Shucker – when one pitcher tosses a bag and knocks an opponent’s bag off the board.
  • Skunk - A game that, by some rules, ends in an 11–0 score.  This is backyard cornhole rule, not used in tournament play
  • Slider – a bag that lands below the hole on the board and slides into the hole.
  • Wash – when both teams or players score the same number of points in a round, so they cancel each other out and the round is effectively washed out
